Who Are We?

Based out of Calgary's two largest post-secondary institutions, Lutheran Campus Ministry Calgary is a safe space for any and all young adults.  We are a Christian community focused on Christian programming but also spirituality and multi-faith programming that advocates the inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community in all aspects of life and spirituality.

Our belief is that any and all should be able to benefit from an open, inclusive, and judgement-free community.

We hold a space for the spiritual-but-not-religious and for people on the margins of Christianity. Non-dogmatic, contemplative, experimental, and social-justice oriented, we honour all aspects of the human condition – the mind, body, and spirit. We are grounded in a liberal understanding of the Christian tradition and seek to affirm people of any, or of no particular, faith tradition. Our ministry has been useful to people of all orientations, backgrounds and upbringings.

Madi Cullen

Community Connector

Hi! I’m Madi and I’m a UofC student going into my fifth and final year of my Psychology degree, with a certificate in Mental Wellbeing and Resilience. I first got involved with Campus Ministry through attending the drum circles and I joined the staff team as a community connector in January 2022! My favourite thing about working with the ministry so far has just been hanging out with students in the Faith and Spirituality Centre (at UofC). Being part of a welcoming, spiritual, community which advocates for the inclusion of all individuals has been so grounding for me as a Christian and as a queer woman. Other than school and work, I love to go for runs or walks with my dog, watch science videos on youtube, and occasionally do yoga!

Community Connector

Herman (he/him) has been an active community member in YYC-Lutheran Campus Ministry since September 2018. He is currently a third year student of the Bachelor of Child Studies (major in Child & Youth Care Counsellor) at Mount Royal University. He likes biking, playing badminton, drawing, singing, and hanging out with friends. With his extensive working experience with children, youth and young adults, supporting people from all backgrounds and abilities to connect with a safe, inclusive, and affirming community is his first priority.

Darren Rea

Community Connector

Darren is currently in his last year of an Entrepreneurship and Innovation Degree with an embedded certificate in leadership studies at Haskayne School of Business (UofC). Along with this he is working as a community connector and digital design artist. Furthermore, Darren is continuously creating art in a vast variety of mediums, including acrylic paintings, poetry, piano, drumming and whatever way he is intuitively drawn. He facilitates (and helps facilitate) events through his own personal channels, UofC's Faith and Spirituality Centre, and now the Campus Ministry. He is super joyous and grateful to have this community to participate in and be a part of – & may all our works bring great fruit into the world!

Rebekah Jayalath

Community Connector

Hi there, my name is Rebekah and I'm a second year student at the University of Calgary, I'm currently working towards a degree in Biological Sciences. I am an avid reader and I also adore singing and dancing! On an off day, I would usually be at home spending time with my kitten Prince. I'm honored to be part of a team that celebrates queer identities and welcomes people of all backgrounds, I can truly feel that I was looking for a community like that in my personal journey of faith. I've been working with the YYC Campus Ministry team since July of 2022 and I can't wait to make more fun memories during our events!

Luis Diaz

Community Connector

My name is Luis, and I am an international student from Mexico. Presently, I am entering the third year of a degree in Political Science, along with minors in Security Studies and Law and Society at the University of Calgary. I am grateful to have been selected to be part of this year’s YYC Campus Ministry team to continue the work that the organization has been doing over the last couple of years. As a Gay man, I feel that it is important to further advocate for the inclusion of the Queer community—in all aspects of life. As a Community Connector, I strive to make contributions that enables Queer students to explore, accept and embrace their identities. Furthermore, I’ll assist the team with the planning and execution of activities and events. As well as with the communications and the design of social media content. Moreover, during my leisure time I enjoy reading, writing, and going on long walks and exploring Calgary! I hope I can make a meaningful contribution for the U of C community.

Natalie Hoa

community connector

Hello! I am currently a student at Mount Royal University in the Child Studies program with minors in psychology and biology. I was introduced to the Campus Ministry community a few years ago through the monthly summer BBQs. Since then, I have been a regular participant at Drum Circle, Simple Supper, Simple Chefs, and more. I joined the staff team in September 2021 as a community connector and assist with LCM’s programs on MRU and U of C campus. After I graduate in 2023, I plan to pursue a master’s degree in counselling psychology (or something else- who knows!). I enjoy Tetris, baking, live music, playing piano, riding my bike, and caring for my vegetable garden during the summer.
